Unity for Human Rights and Democracy
Unity for Human Rights and Democracy(Unity) is registered non-profit organization working on Human Rights and rights of prisoners in Ethiopia. Based in Toronto since 2007, Unity is a volunteer-based dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights in Ethiopia through advocacy and awareness creation among Ethiopians in Canada and with Canadian
organizations working on Human Rights.
Unity welcomes the initiative taken by Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and his office to investigate the appalling Human Rights Violation in Ethiopia. It went out of the limit of the use of lethal weapons for law enforcement purposes. The Ethiopian Government over the weekend's demonstration have fired live bullets and killed more than hundred civilians, maimed
a sizable numbers and detained thousands in unknown camps.
The Commission's request to conduct an independent investigation is a big step taken by the International Community to protect millions of Ethiopians that are under the specter of military attacks. Unity while encouraging the steps taken by the Commission, it calls upon all Ethiopian civic organizations, political parties and faith based charities that are working on Ethiopia to join hands to petition donor countries to put pressure on the Ethiopian government to stop its impunity and start dialogue with demonstrators.
Unity affirms its continued commitment to promote the cause of freedom and democracy until justice and freedom prevails in Ethiopia.
