Facebook, Twitter and You Tube appear to have been blocked in Ethiopia on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Many people in different towns of the country are unable to access sites including Facebook, Twitter and You Tube over both normal internet connections and 3G services on the state-owned monopoly Ethio Telecom’s connection, multiple sources confirmed to Ethiopia Observer. Parts of the Ethiopian higher education entrance exams allegedly had made it onto social media on Friday, which is likely the cause of the shutdown.
There is no official statement from the government yet. However, a month ago the Ethiopian Ministry of Education postponed the exam when it reportedly leaked on social media. The decision must have taken so that people would no longer be able to share leaked papers.
