Police kill at least eight people in Addis Ababa on Thursday as residents in the Bole sub section of the capital confronted police and a demolishing team that was tearing down houses for the second day today.
According to eyewitnesses, at least 100 others sustained gunshot wounds and 4 police officers were killed in the deadly confrontation with the residents. The deceased include children and teens, witnesses said.
The government sent hundreds of police officers and a demolition team to the area locally known as Woregenu to demolish houses that the government said were illegally built. Three people were reportedly shot and killed by police on Wednesday, on the first day of the demolition.
About 2000 houses have been demolished in the two days of horror to the residents, who said they suspect the prime area near Bole would be given to a wealthy investor.
