Ethiopia defeats Kenya 2-0

By Kennedy Langat

The national soccer team Harambee stars Sunday went down 2-0 to hosts Ethiopia in the first leg of the Africa Nation Championships at Bahir Dar International Stadium, 700-kilometres from the north of the capital, Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia netted their first goal in the 23rd minute courtesy of Asechalew Girma before Gatoch Panom made it 2-0 in the 77th  minute to hand the hosts all the maximum points.

Kenya could have secured their consolation goal save for Tarik Getnet’s heroics who saved Kevin Kimani’s penalty to deny Kenyans the goal.

The team coached by Bobby Williamson will have to score more three goals in the return leg set to be played here in Nairobi.

The tournament is specific to home based players. Kenya has never qualified to the Africa nations Championship finals.

Ethiopia has played Kenya 28 times and have won 12 times while Kenya won eight times.

Kenya eliminated Ethiopia  in the Africa Cup of nations qualifiers in 1972.
